Double Deep Heavy Duty Pallet Racks

Last week, our company completed the installation of a heavy duty pallet racking project. This heavy duty pallet racking project differed somewhat from ordinary heavy duty pallet racking; it was a bit special. Ordinary heavy duty pallet racking is usually single-row or back-to-back, which is the most common configuration. However, the project we completed last week was a double deep heavy duty pallet racking project. Today, we’ll briefly introduce double deep heavy duty pallet racking.

Double-deep racking refers to two rows of racks placed back-to-back. While back-to-back racking typically has two uprights frame, double-deep racking has four. Therefore, the biggest advantage of double-deep racking is that it saves aisle space, making better use of space and allowing for the storage of more goods.

Aside from the slightly unusual arrangement, double deep pallet racks are essentially the same as heavy duty racks, primarily composed of uprights and beams. The materials used for the uprights and beams are determined by the load-bearing capacity. Double-deep racks can hold four pallets in the depth direction and typically two or three in the length direction, depending on the beam length and pallet size. Due to their depth, double deep pallet racks place certain demands on forklifts. Reaching deeper storage locations requires longer forklifts and higher load bearing capacity.

Generally speaking, standard heavy duty pallet racking, whether single or double row, requires an aisle of at least 3 meters. This excludes narrow aisle pallet racking, which typically requires only about 2 meters of aisle space. However, standard heavy duty pallet rack requires between 3 and 3.3 meters. Therefore, a single row of four depth racking saves a significant amount of aisle space, thereby increasing storage locations and making better use of warehouse space.
